The hardest day of my life, made better with kind hospitality and king cake

There are restaurants you remember because of what you ordered, and restaurants you remember because of who you were when you sat down. Baumhower’s is both for me. My family ate here together immediately after my mother died in February 2019. It was one of those surreal meals grief creates, when everyone still has to do ordinary human things like sit down, look at a menu and eat, even though absolutely nothing feels ordinary anymore. And somehow, that February day, there was king cake. That detail has stayed with me. A bright, almost absurd little piece of celebration appearing in the middle of the worst day. Food does that sometimes. It keeps showing up with its own calendar even when yours has stopped. Outside my own history with it, Baumhower’s is an Alabama institution built around game-day food: wings, hand-breaded Hot Lips, scratch-made sauces, gooey fries covered in blanco cheese and bacon, burgers and big shareable plates. The dessert menu keeps the Southern accent going with fried banana pudding, blackberry cobbler, pecan fudge pie and beignets. Plenty of people come here to watch football. I’ll probably always see one particular table in February. That’s part of what Hungry Hungry Huntsville is meant to hold, too: not just where we eat, but the strange, tender ways restaurants become landmarks in our own lives.
