Host by Homegrown

A New Downtown Huntsville Home for Gathering

Host by Homegrown Turns a Former Fine-Dining Space Into Something Entirely Different 101 Washington St. NE, Huntsville Opened in August in the former The Bottle space downtown, Host by Homegrown isn't quite a restaurant, bar or traditional event venue. Instead, Homegrown has created a two-story gathering space where the programming keeps changing: chef dinners, cocktail experiences, wine tastings, flower workshops, Mahjong nights, live music and classes led by local makers and creatives. There may not be one signature dish to order here, and that's the idea. Check the calendar to see who's hosting and what Huntsville is gathering around next.

Madison Gets a New Mexican Cocina With Birria Ramen, Quesabirria Pizza and Plenty of Tequila Viva Tequila Mexican Cocina is now open on County Line Road with a sprawling Mexican and Tex-Mex menu that goes well beyond the usual combination plates. The restaurant has an entire “Birria Lovers” section featuring birria ramen, birria tostadas, a pizza-shaped quesabirria with consommé, and a birria “Philly” loaded with peppers, onions, mushrooms and melted cheese. Elsewhere, look for street tacos on house-made corn tortillas, flautas, chiles poblanos, sizzling fajitas, molcajete and seafood dishes. The bar leans into the restaurant’s name with margaritas including blackberry and sangria versions.

Perseus Sound Bar

Opened in May 2026 inside Anthem House at MidCity, Perseus blends a Mediterranean-leaning café, Italian pastries, specialty coffee and a serious vinyl listening room built around hi-fi sound rather than televisions and background noise.

Some new restaurants give Huntsville another place to eat. Perseus Sound Bar is trying to give us another way to spend time. Opened in May 2026 inside Anthem House at MidCity, Perseus blends a Mediterranean-leaning café, Italian pastries, specialty coffee and a serious vinyl listening room built around hi-fi sound rather than televisions and background noise. Even the name has Huntsville orbit: owner Nick Quinn has said Perseus was inspired by a NASA article about the sound of a black hole. The daytime menu has included handmade Sicilian cannoli filled with ricotta cream, maritozzo, pizza fritta and focaccia layered with mortadella, pistachio and burrata, while special pizza nights and an expanding dinner and cocktail program hint at what Perseus eventually wants to become. Come hungry, certainly. But this may be one of the clearest examples yet of where Hungry Hungry Huntsville's Eat and Linger worlds collide: somewhere you're supposed to sit down, hear the whole song and stay awhile.
OPENING

The Chop House

A substantial steakhouse system has settled over Madison

160 Graphics Drive, Madison Steakhouse conditions have officially arrived in Town Madison, with hand-cut steaks, creamed spinach, onion rings, crème brûlée and enough food moving around the table to make ordering only one entrée feel unnecessarily restrictive. The Chop House brought its first Alabama restaurant to Town Madison in June 2026, adding another full-service dining option near Toyota Field and the airport. The menu follows the classic American steakhouse playbook: steaks and chops, seafood, generously built salads, shareable appetizers, familiar sides and desserts that encourage everyone to find a little more room.

Soul Train Station

All Aboard This Real Train Car for Fried Chicken in Harvest

5572 Alabama 53, Harvest No reservations -- first come, first served, southern fried food and service on a train car. DO I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION?? Okay, so THIS is exactly the kind of place I want the Flavor Forecast to uncover; and it's just a hop, skip, and a jump from my old Sparkman High School (c/o2000 forever). And my Great Granddaddy was a railroad switchman so, full circle special to me. On to the facts. Soul Train Station is a locally owned soul-food restaurant built around an actual train car in Harvest, with a whole 1970s/80s soul-music theme that feels delightfully specific. The main dining room is open daily, while the train car itself is used for Sunday dining and private events. The menu leans straight into Southern comfort food territory with fried chicken, mashed potatoes, greens, mac and cheese and cornbread. Forecast: 100% chance I need to eat fried chicken on a train while somebody plays old-school soul and I relive old dance team moves in my ever spinning disco brain. 🚂🍗🎶

BawBaw’s BBQ

Holy Smoke: BawBaw’s Brings Barbecue to Church

310 S Madison St, Athens Some barbecue places try to look cool. BawBaw’s just IS. Tucked inside a former church building, this spot feels deeply Alabama in the best possible way: smoked meat, sweet tea energy, and the kind of warmth that makes strangers accidentally start telling you family stories at the next table. The brisket deserves attention, but the sleeper hit might honestly be the big-as-your-face bologna sandwich on white bread. No irony. No reinvention. Just comfort-food confidence. And the banana pudding? Church potluck auntie-level good. BawBaw himself is a former cotton farmer who did all the work inside the restaurant by hand — and it feels like exactly the kind of place bigger cities spend millions trying to imitate with reclaimed wood and Edison bulbs while Athens casually already has the real thing. Go BawBaw. 🐷
OPENING

Square at 113

Come for the Hot Honey Wings; Stay for the Music and Slushies

113 S Marion St , Athens, AL, Square at 113 feels like somebody gave downtown Athens an espresso martini and a playlist. Part Southern comfort spot, part social hub, part “wait… Athens has karaoke now?” situation, this place has quickly become one of the city’s most talked-about hangs. The atmosphere leans lively without losing that small-town warmth. You can come for wings and suddenly end up deep in conversation with somebody’s aunt about local football, divorce recovery, or where to find the best coconut cake in Limestone County. Which, honestly, is peak Alabama hospitality. 🌶️🍗 Order Strategy: hot honey wings first, life decisions later. I don’t drink alcohol anymore but a frozen cocktail on a patio swing sounds like a brunch/happy hour opportunity you need to experience.
OPENING

Gabriela’s Latin Fusion

Athens Turns Up the Flavor at Gabriela’s

110 W Green St, Suite 3, Athens Athens Gets a Bright New Forecast! Sunny with a 100% chance of Latin flavor, colorful window murals and fresh juice capable of reviving the soul. Gabriela’s Latin Fusion brings the color, energy and bold seasoning that downtown Athens needs. The menu crosses Latin American comfort-food traditions with big shareable plates, fresh juices and the kind of combinations that make you wonder why you haven’t always been dipping sweet plantains into queso. That queso-and-plantain pairing deserves a special weather advisory: creamy, salty, sweet and likely to disappear before the rest of the meal arrives. Then there’s the parrillada—a generous spread of beautifully seasoned meats with enough food to share at the table and still carry home for a very exciting round of leftovers. The size gets your attention, but the seasoning is what makes it memorable. Gabriela’s feels like part of something exciting happening in Athens: a small Southern town making more room at the table for broader culinary traditions, brighter flavors and restaurants with a distinct point of view.
OPENING

Jerry John Pizzeria

Athens, Come for the Slice—Stay for the Stuffed Shells

305 W Lee St., Athens Pizza by the slice may be the headline at Jerry John Pizzeria, but the supporting cast is ready to steal the show. The downtown Athens menu stretches well beyond pepperoni and cheese into full Italian-American comfort-food territory: baked manicotti, stuffed shells, oversized Stromboli and hand-breaded jalapeño poppers that deserve far more attention than the average pizza-place appetizer. I liked that Jerry John can be two different meals depending on the day. Stop in for a quick slice, or settle in with a table full of bubbling cheese, red sauce, pasta and something crispy from the fryer. The hand-breaded jalapeño poppers were my surprise favorite, while the manicotti, stuffed shells and Stromboli make this more than another pizza stop.
OPENING

Southside Cocktail Club

Classic cocktails and old-Huntsville character in Downtown Huntsville

105 Washington St SE, Ste 100, Huntsville New in downtown Huntsville, Southside Cocktail Club brings moody lighting, elevated cocktails, and vintage sophisticated vibes to the city’s growing nightlife scene. The upscale hometown bar feels polished without losing personality, blending classic cocktail culture with little nods to Huntsville history throughout the space. The bar top itself is crafted from reclaimed bowling alley wood, while vintage maps, baseball cards, and old photos give the whole place a layered, lived-in atmosphere that feels more timeless than trendy. The menu focuses on quality classic cocktails with a few thoughtful house twists, alongside a compact food lineup of salads, sandwiches, and bar bites
OPENING

Qahwtea Coffee & Bakery

Come for the Coffee, Stay for the Pastry Case

4721 University Drive, Huntsville, AL 35816 Qahwtea, a Yemeni-style café and bakery that opened earlier this year, feels like the kind of place built for slowing down a little. Warm lighting, layered spices in the air, pastries tucked behind glass cases, people lingering over drinks instead of rushing back to their cars. The whole atmosphere feels soft around the edges in a way that’s increasingly rare. The drink menu leans both comforting and refreshing, with options like the Qahwtea latte, traditional Qishr coffee, and colorful flavored mojitos from the cold-drink side of the menu. Food-wise, theres a rainbow of stunning sweet treats behind the glass case just begging to sit beside your caffeinated delight - plus amply savory options too.
OPENING

Pacific Pearl Kitchen

Filipino Comfort Food Worth Finding at Lowe Mill

2211 Seminole Drive SW, Unit RR4 Popular food truck destination Pacific Pearl Kitchen debuted new permanent digs at Lowe Mill in late 2025, quickly establishing itself among the city’s growing international food scene as a staple serving organic Filipino and Hong Kong-inspired cuisine . The menu mixes comfort and flavor beautifully, with dishes like pancit bihon, a stir-fried rice noodle dish packed with savory depth, alongside crispy lechon kawali, aka deep-fried pork belly that deserves our full attention. Owner/chef Mayleen Epperson arrives at Pacific Pearl Kitchen around 4 a.m. daily to do her two-and-a-half-hour process for boiling pork belly — and that level of dedication shows in every dish.
OPENING

Kyuramen

5850 University Dr NW suite D2 Ramen shops kinda feel like the new coffee shops in HSV, and small chain Kyuramen knows exactly what it’s doing. This spot leans full cozy-anime-core with rich broths, dramatic lighting, and the kind of booths that make you want to sit there contemplating your life choices over soft-boiled eggs and tonkotsu. 🍜 Ordering First: spicy tonkotsu ramen, okonomiyaki, + any appetizer involving crispy edges

Hattie B's

Nashville Heat with a Huntsville Address

3212 Memorial Pkwy SW, Huntsville Hattie B’s "Dirty Bird" loaded Fries: Hot chicken conditions remain hazardous to white shirts and completely worth it. Hattie B’s "Dirty Bird" loaded Fries: Hot chicken conditions remain hazardous to white shirts and completely worth it. Hot chicken has become part of modern Southern food culture at this point, and Huntsville was always eventually going to join the party. 🔥 Forecast: expect short waits for fresh food, spice-induced confidence, and at least one person at your table regretting their heat-level choices. And stay for a game of cornhole!

Dragon Alley

MidCity’s Neon-Lit Alley of Dumplings, Noodles and Late-Night Bites

1030 Mid City Dr, Huntsville, AL 35806 Neon signs. DJs. Dumplings. Decor/vibe here shares main-character energy with the food. Dragon Alley feels like Huntsville accidentally wandered into a Tokyo side street and decided to stay for noodles. Tucked into MidCity, the pan-Asian spot leans hard into atmosphere in the best possible way: glowing signs, moody lighting, sizzling plates, and enough visual chaos to cure a boring Tuesday. The whole place feels like a sensory playground for food people. It’s loud, immersive, slightly unhinged, and honestly? Huntsville needed that. Order dumplings. Split noodles with friends. Double up on the Crab Rangoon (it’s top 5 best I’ve ever had). Pretend you’re filming a food documentary while somebody’s cousin remixes house music in the background. We have fun here.
OPENING

Barracuda Taco Stand

Taco Stand and margarita garden in downtown Huntsville

535 Meridian St N, Huntsville Doubling down as both Taco Stand AND margarita garden, Barracuda swam into Huntsville near The Lumberyard back in March. The budding chain (I call them chain 🔗 links) opened locations in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and the Gulf Coast, before debuting its breezy walk-up stand of fresh tortillas, tacos, bowls, queso, guac and frozen drinks in North AL. Expect the kind of laid-back atmosphere that works equally well for lunch runs or long patio hangs. Bonus points for the weekday happy hour featuring margarita and nacho deals, which honestly feels like a public service during patio season. 🌮I’m excited to try: broccoli and crispy fish tacos, queso with salsa macha to uplevel the heat! Two of my favorite things on one menu.

Good Company Cafe Five Points

A NEW BRUNCH FRONT HITS FIVE POINTS

720 Pratt Ave NE Good Company Cafe has officially brought its brunch-and-lunch magic north to Five Points, taking over part of the former 1892 East building on Pratt Avenue. Owners Angela and John Lindbeck already built a loyal following at the original South Huntsville cafe, and this second location feels especially right at home in one of Huntsville’s most established neighborhoods. This is more than another restaurant opening to me. That building has serious Huntsville food history, from Zesto to Sazio’s to 1892 East, and I love seeing another locally owned business write the next chapter instead of wiping the slate clean. Expect coffee, breakfast sandwiches, biscuits, house-made favorites and the sort of place where a quick breakfast can accidentally become a two-hour catch-up. ☕ Best Move: breakfast or brunch, then wander Five Points and pretend you live in a delightfully walkable little food village.
OPENING

Salt & Light

Food truck favorite finds a permanent South Huntsville home

11243 S Memorial Pkwy, Huntsville Salt & Light made the jump from beloved South Huntsville food truck to brick-and-mortar restaurant this spring, and the menu still carries the personality (and the restaurant quality grab-and-go options) that made people follow the truck around in the first place. The menu reads like Southern comfort food with a little curveball energy. Think crispy Gulf shrimp tacos with avocado-lime crema, catfish over pimento cheese polenta, shrimp po’boys and a gloriously named Fat Nasty Burger stacked with bacon, pepper jack, caramelized onions and jalapeño-fig jam. That is precisely the sort of menu I want to see more of in Huntsville: familiar enough to crave immediately, weird enough to make you curious. 🌶️ My Ordering Radar: catfish + pimento cheese polenta, shrimp taco, and somebody at the table needs to take responsibility for ordering the Fat Nasty Burger.
