THE STORY
Why this place matters
Some restaurants become part of a city's celebration vocabulary. Cotton Row is one of Huntsville's. Chef James Boyce opened the restaurant on the historic Courthouse Square in 2009, bringing a serious fine-dining résumé and classical French technique to a menu rooted in Southern ingredients. Over the years, it became one of those downtown addresses associated with anniversaries, birthdays, business dinners and nights when dinner itself is the occasion. And then there's the PB&J in Phyllo. It remains one of my favorite desserts on the planet: a playful little transformation of peanut butter and jelly wrapped in crisp phyllo that once earned a place on Alabama Tourism's 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die. We're slowly eating our way through Alabama's famous 100 Dishes list. I can happily mark this one already eaten, remembered and very much on my current radar.
