THE STORY
Why this place matters
A fine-dining front is moving through South Huntsville with Beef Wellington, lamb lollipops and tableside flames—plus a dangerously dip-worthy pear-Gorgonzola vinaigrette. One of my favorite parts of loving someone is introducing them to food they have never tried before. At Nick’s Ristorante, that food was Beef Wellington (the someone was my husband and the web developer here at HHH). It appeared as the weekend special with garlic mashed potatoes, roasted caulilini and a cognac-black-garlic demi-glace—the sort of grand, pastry-wrapped production that makes dinner feel like an occasion before anyone even cuts into it. I already knew I loved Beef Wellington. What I loved more was sharing Ryan’s first one with him and experiencing it again through his reaction. That little exchange—You’ve never had this? You have to try it—is one of the great pleasures of dining together. The starters held their own. The Caprese was bright and beautifully balanced, while the Caesar came properly savory with Parmesan, croutons and smoked anchovies. Then came my potential new favorite salad dressing anywhere: pear-Gorgonzola vinaigrette. We liked it enough to request extra and dip the bread into it. That is the hot tip. Forget proper butter protocol. Get the dressing. The herb-seasoned lamb lollipops arrived with a rosemary-Dijon sauce, and I ate mine exactly as the name instructs: picked it up by the bone and went in. This is fine dining, but I ain’t proper—and a lamb lollipop deserves to be treated like a lollipop. Then Ryan got to witness his first flaming Baked Alaska. Nick’s version wraps spumoni ice cream in flaky pastry and baked meringue before the Grand Marnier flambé provides the tableside fire. Even when you know the flame is coming, it still steals the room. Why This Place Matters Nick and Sherry Mikus founded Nick’s in 2010 around Italian family recipes, steaks, cigars and the feeling of welcoming friends into their home. Today, the menu combines aged Certified Angus Beef, fresh seafood, Northern Italian specialties and desserts made in-house. The restaurant also offers two distinct versions of the evening. The cigar-friendly bar and lounge hosts live music and a livelier atmosphere. Diners who prefer a quieter meal—or simply want to hear the person across the table—can request the separate smoke-free dining room. That choice matters. Nick’s can be steaks, cigars and music, or a slower dinner built around conversation. For us, it became a night of firsts: Ryan’s first Beef Wellington, his first flaming Baked Alaska and another reminder that sharing food can let you experience something you love for the first time all over again. 🥩 Signature Orders: Wood-Fired Steaks · Beef Wellington When Offered · Lamb Lollipops · Caprese · Caesar Salad · Pear-Gorgonzola Vinaigrette · Mom’s Baked Alaska 🔥 Best Move: Watch for the Beef Wellington special, order extra pear-Gorgonzola vinaigrette for bread dipping and finish with the flaming Baked Alaska. Vibe Check: Old-school supper-club energy, Northern Italian comfort and tableside fire hidden inside an unassuming South Huntsville shopping center. Good to Know: Nick’s is restricted to guests 19 and older. The bar and cigar lounge permit smoking and host live music; request the separate smoke-free dining room for a quieter experience.
